Chapter Sixteen
James
Revelations and reunions
Don’t leave me.
Maggie’s words stab at my heart. She sounded so scared and alone. We need to get her settled, safe. She’s a bright yellow bundle in Nate’s arms, his grip tight with one hand gently stroking her brow.
Don’t leave me.
Shame and remorse fill me as I navigate the narrow road lined on each side by fence and ranch gates. Maggie has been through so much. More than I am probably aware of, and if I had taken my head out of my ass the last two weeks, if I had been there for her, I wouldn’t feel like I’m a step behind all the time.
Nate is whispering to Maggie even though she is unconscious. With a glance in the rearview mirror, I question the one man who has been closest to her the last couple of months.
“Why do you call her Spitfire, Nate?”
He briefly meets my eyes in the mirror, then he goes back to staring at Maggie. “Are you sure you want me to be the one to tell you what happened in Sierra?”
Dread fills me with trepidation and I nod. “I don’t want to put Maggie through anything else stressful for awhile. She needs a break. So yes, if you tell me instead, I would be grateful.
“The day she was taken from Littlefield and arrived in Sierra, I saw her coming out of sedation on a gurney. Maggie was stubborn from the beginning. Refusing to give us information, not cooperating when we were trying to get her vitals - I had to hold her in my arms to get her weight because she refused to stand on her own.” Nate gives a laugh. “She almost took me down, making me hold all her weight. She was a mess. Bruised, with scratches and abrasions, but she still fought. Boy, did she fight. Any way she could.”
Nate’s silent for a long moment. When I give a quick look in the mirror, he’s got an expression of remorse and -admiration?- before he continues. “Lucy hijacked her from the lodge and took her to the clinic against everyone’s orders. But damn, Maggie came out of that sedation fighting. She likely couldn’t feel her limbs very well, but that didn’t stop her. She literally fell out of bed, breaking her nose, mind you, and she crawled to the window. It took her almost forty minutes, but she managed to pull herself up to the window and drag herself up and out. She was determined.”
“And you just watched or what?” Pride fills me at Maggie’s actions, but it’s interesting hearing that same pride in Nate’s voice.
“I did. She tried again and again and again. I’m not proud of it, but we ended up handcuffing her to her bed.”
“You what?!” Livid, I slam on the brakes and I turn around to confront him. “How long was she restrained?” Nate meets the anger in my eyes head on. I can see there are tears in his eyes.
“She was restrained up to the moment that the explosion occurred in Sierra.
